Born in 1344 Edmund Stafford was the second son of Sir Richard Stafford of Clifton and Isabel de Vernon. Stafford attended Oxford University, following which he was appointed canon of Lichfield, then dean of York. In 1395 he was nominated to the see of Exeter. He died in 1419 and was buried in the Lady Chapel of Exeter Cathedral, where survives his elaborate monument with recumbent alabaster effigy.
